i just watched BUTTERFLY LOVERS with my mother.
i know i know, wth right?
when i told some of my friends that im going to watch the movie, all of them gave me the OMG-YOU-WEIRDO face.
that was what i thought about the movie and especially the male lead, at first.
but i know that my mother likes the original liangzhu (dont know if some of you understand what does liangzhu means) and it's not everyday i get to watch a movie with her. i have the ocbc card which entitles me to a buy 1 get 1 free ticket so i mean, why not right? i can accompany my mother and while she watches the movie i can just sit next to her and sleep if i want. but of course i didnt think it would be THAT bad.
so apart from expecting a lot of deliberate close up scenes of wuzun's chiselled face, i didnt think i'd take away much from the movie.
but surprisingly, i thought it was not a bad watch afterall!
the story is about the 10th reincarnation of liangzhu and even though obviously they made up the plot, i think it was quite meaningful and very sad! the movie showed that they are really star-crossed lovers and even after 10 reincarnations their love still ended in tragedy. both of them had dreams about each other since young. so maybe dreams will tell us something about our past life?
err actually i really dont think so. i always forget my dreams anyway.
the silliest thing about the whole movie was that their ending imitated that of romeo and juliet.
and the epic fight-in-the-rain scene? super cliche.
what i found frustrating at first was that they kept bordering on what would eventually become an happy ending and i would not have liked that because liangzhu is supposed to be a tragedy and if they changed it, it wont be liangzhu anymore! so everytime there was a twist in the plot which gave hope to the fate of the couple, i felt like i was going to be cheated.
thankfully the movie ended in tragedy, just the way it rightfully should.
so what started as frustrating became interesting.
i would give it more credit than the 1.5 stars (out of 5) it got in the straits times. even better if they got a more manly male lead. Though many would have thought that 'sparkly eyes' and 'a perfectly chiselled nose' are compliments, they are not exactly what i have in mind for a lead who's supposed to be very good at sword-fighting. hmmm.
